KD Coaster Profiles

Here you will find profiles of all 13 KD coasters (Kings Dominion’s website says 14, but they are counting both sides of Rebel Yell)

1.   Anaconda:  Anaconda opened in 1991 and has a drop of 144 feet in which you go underwater.  It was made by Arrow Dynamics.  It has 4 inversions and was designed exclusively for Kings Dominion.

2.  Avalanche:  The Avalanche was built in 1988 by Heinrich Mack GMBH & Co.  It is 56 feet tall and has a unique bobsled style which provides an awesome ride a you travel through its many twists and turns.

3.  Back Lot Stunt Coaster:  The Back Lot Stunt Coaster was opened in 2006 and features a Hollywood movie (Italian Job) chase scene.  It was made by Premier Rides and is LIM launched instead of having a lift hill.  After you are rocketed out of the station at 40 mph you go through a series of twists and turns and even a dark tunnel.

4 . Dominator: Dominator is Kings Dominion’s newest coaster.  It originally was built at Geauga Lake, a now defunct theme park in Ohio.  It has 5 inversions and is a floorless coaster designed by Bollinger & Mabillard.

5.  Flight of Fear: Flight of Fear is the world’s first LIM launched coaster. It was built in 1996 by Premier Rides.  The ride is completely indoors and launches you out of the station at 54 mph through a bunch of inversions and 30 vertical curves, more than 25 compound horizontal curves.

6.  Grizzly: Grizzly opened in 1982 and was modeled after the Coney Island Wildcat.  Built by Taft Attractions Group this bumpy, rickety awesome coaster has an initial drop of 87 feet.  This wooden coaster was built of southern pine.

7.  Hurler: The Hurler was built in 1994 by International Coaster Inc., The Stand Co., and Steven Schaeffer Associates.  The wooden coaster was originally themed after the movie Wayne’s World when the park was owned by Paramount.  This coaster of excellent proportion has an 83 foot drop.

8.  Rebel Yell:  The Rebel Yell opened when the majority of Kings Dominion opened in 1975.  This unique coaster features two tracks that race after being drop from an 85 feet tall lift hill.  This wooden coaster has 12 hills and features a tunnel 156 feet in length.

9.  Ricochet: The Ricochet is a wild mouse coaster built in 2002.  It features a single car train and was built by Heinrich Mack GMBH & Company.  This twisting, curving coaster features an initial drop of 50 feet.

10.    Scooby Doo’s Ghoster Coaster: Scooby Doo’s Ghoster Coaster was built in 1974 and opened before the majority of KD was.  This 35 feet tall, 35 mph coaster is truly a thrill for everyone in the family and it was my first coaster.

11.  Shockwave: The Shockwave is a stand-up coaster built in 1986.  This 85 feet tall coaster was built by the now defunct Togo International company.  It features a back flip and a huge helix.  The Shockwave almost feels like a wooden coaster because of its bumpiness which is a common trait of coasters made by Togo.

12.    Taxi Jam Coaster: The 8 feet tall Taxi Jam coaster is the true definition of a kiddy coaster.  This coaster was built in 1997 by Miller Coaster Company.

13.    Volcano, The Blast Coaster: Volcano, The Blast Coaster was built 1998 by Intamin AG and is centered around a huge volcano like structure.  It has three inversions and is a favorite ride around the park.  The launch of this coaster makes it the first inverted coaster to feature an electromagnetic launch.
